Mise En Scene
In the movie the Holiday, I decided to comment on this movie because of the the change of emotion throughout the movie. I also liked the use of the lighting throughout the movie that reflects the emotions of the characters throughout the movie. I found that it was easy to find how the clothing can make you feel so much, it gives you context to where the location is without even knowing where the movie takes place. Mise-en-scene it is conveying emotion without someone explicitly saying it, this movie made it easy to point out and to indicate certain aspects and details of the movie.
In the opening scene it is these hard-working women who are going through crisis's, one lady is in warm and sunny LA and the other lady is in cold and gloomy England. As the movie progresses you have the first lady in LA with a large and very neat house, it matches the characters actions and way that she is, very put together and organized and successful. For her setting there is more of a high key lighting. The setting of the second lady on England is at her house on the countryside, it is cold and is a very lived in house with lots of character, which again matches that characters personality, kind of a mess, you can tell she is a writer because of the amount of books in the house. The lighting in her house is dark and cold, giving you the chill feeling that she is. In her house there is a low-key light setting.
Now moving on to the costume, you know without being told the location that character one is in a warm and sunny climate, first she is wearing shorts and a airy top, so you know that it is warm where she is. While on the other hand character two is in a cold climate based on her amount of layering of sweaters and then a coat and a scarf and boots and long pants. The costume also indicates when the film was made.
Throughout the films' the actor acted in a non-method way. They were mostly conveying what the films purpose was and kind of going overboard on how they acted, for example in the the beginning of the movie character one is over the top yelling and screaming at her ex-boyfriend, throughout the whole movie she plays a role of a rich and too good for anyone. The other actor takes on a more natural persona, but still has aspects of over the top-ness when she is in her house crying and drinking a bottle of wine. It is very dramatized in the way that they hold themselves and the way that they somehow have the same issue and decide to switch houses at the same time.
