Film Viewing Practice Essay "Agent Carter"
Within the first seconds of the clip it is a close up of agent Carters face and Captain Americas face, you are getting a sense of the emotions that she is going through. You can tell that she cares about him and that he is special to her. You can see the fear in Captain Americas face as his plane is going down in the middle of nowhere, so when you get the close-up clip you are getting more emotion from the character. Then as the clip goes on you have a boom shot when Agent Carter is fighting the men in the building, it is giving you many different views of the same scene. You are moving through the action with the main character, you get shots from the ground and from a higher angle, and even scenes moving with her as she is fighting.
In the opening scene you will notice that they are using a type of editing called cutting, that is when one clip is instantly changing from one scene to the other. You see this when Agent Carter is on one end of the phone and Captain America is on the other, it goes from her face and then to his and back and fourth. Then at the end of that scene the camera shot fades away for the room that she was in, and suddenly the scene cuts to an office that Agent Carter has stared to work in again. Then later in the clip she is on the phone writing something down and in a whipping edit a car passes and she is seen walking towards a building.
Moving on to sound, starting with the opening clip, where it is Captain America going down in the plane, the director used diegetic sound, as he is going down with the plane you can hear the wind and the strain of the planes movement as he directs it downwards. This could even be synchrous sound because it is matching the activity that is happening in the scene. The next sound that is distinct within the clip is also a synchrous sound as it is an alarm that is going off in an office and that sound indicates that there is a call coming in, so you know that all the characters know that the sound it there.
Throughout the whole clip you know off the bat that this is not in our time period it is in the 40's or so. There clothing is what indicates what the time period is, without anyone having to tell you. Then in the end of the clip you are put into a setting of a warehouse, Agent Carter walks up to a very large building and when she is inside you know that it is a warehouse because of the shelf's of items. Then throughout the whole clip the lighting is a bit dimer again based off of the time period and how they weren't as advanced as we are now, that again gives you context to the time period. Also the acting is a very key opponent in the film and Agent Carter takes on, you can tell she is professional and organized by the way she sits very straight and only speaks when she feels necessary. You know she is strong and holds herself passionately and she's also very confined. The actor also takes on a Method acting throughout this as she is portraying a very different person then who she really is.
